10 Wedding Reception Decoration Ideas on a Budget

Although a wedding is really about the ceremony, for many of your guests, the real wedding begins at the reception (i.e. food + dancing + open bar = serious fun). For the bride and groom, the reception is usually when they get to relax and let loose as well, but the planning of the reception is anything but relaxing, especially if you’re trying to stick to a strict budget.
Luckily, there are plenty of ways to save money on fun, elegant, and memorable decor. Here are ten inexpensive wedding reception decoration ideas.

Save Money on Wedding Reception Decorations

1. Use White Christmas Lights
Many people use white Christmas lights all year round on their back porches as a simple and elegant decoration. And these lights can make a beautiful addition to any wedding reception venue! They can be hung from the ceiling, around tables, around the cake, or in potted plants. If you don’t want to use Christmas lights, consider lanterns instead.
2. Tie Ribbons
Seat covers can be expensive to rent and a lot of work to make. Instead of using seat covers, get some beautiful wide ribbon to tie on the backs of the chairs to add some elegance and spruce things up. Ribbon is a cheap alternative compared to fancy seat covers. Enlist the help of friends to get the ribbons cut and tied for the big day.
3. Add a Water FeatureA nice addition to the entrance of your reception would be a water fountain. It could even be a small one that you have in your home that sits on a table. The sound of a water fountain is so refreshing, and it would be nice for your guests to listen to as they can finally relax at the reception.
4. Use Feathers
Feathers are a big trend in wedding decor. Buy them in bulk from a craft store and create large feather wreaths to hang on the walls or add them to centerpieces of flowers for an elegant (and inexpensive) look.
5. Decorate with Food
The wedding food and drink menu you choose and the way it’s arranged on platters can add lots of pizzazz to your big day. Huge and assorted apothecary jars of candy on the dessert bar create a festive mood, while gorgeous trays and farm fresh cheeses and rustic bread can instantly make the party have a more organic feel.
6. Add Candles
There’s nothing more romantic than a dim room lit only by the glow of hundreds of candles. And luckily, candles are inexpensive.

7. Cover with Fabric
You can get yards of your favorite fabrics at a craft store and use it for everything from covering tables to draping from the ceiling (i.e. sheer fabrics work well for this and create a romantic atmosphere). Get creative with material to create a soft, intimate atmosphere.
8. Have a Picnic
I was at an outdoor wedding once where reception “tables” were just blankets and pillows on the ground and each blanket had its own picnic basket filled with goodies and wine. It was fun, classy, and unique – not to mention much cheaper than a formal affair with chairs.
9. Display Your Engagement PhotosYour guests will love to look at your engagement photographs, and your reception is the perfect place to display them. In fact, your reception may be the only place that some of your guests will ever get to see your engagement photos. And while you’re at it, bring some of your favorite pictures of you and your spouse-to-be to show at the reception. If you are unsure about displaying them in frames or in a collage, consider creating a slide show for reception entertainment.
10. Have Fun with FlowersI went to a wedding once that had some large flower displays. They looked like large flower balls. They were elegant, eye-catching, and memorable. To be honest, I don’t remember any decorations other than the flower balls from this wedding. While these displays looked professionally made, a bride and groom could make these flower balls themselves by getting large styrofoam balls (at a craft store like Michael’s) and inserting the stems of the flowers into them. These would be inexpensive to make as long as you either used silk flowers or ordered your flowers from an online wholesaler to save money on wedding flower arrangements.

5 TIPS FOR CHOOSING WINE FOR YOUR WEDDING

You might remember a few weeks ago we published a post featuring 7 Delicious Toast Wines Under $20 by the lovely Hana-Lee from the Wander and Wine blog. Well today, we get to gain from Hana-Lee’s wino prowess  (after all she is a certified sommelier!) yet again, this time she’s delivering  five important tips for how to choose your wedding wine to please your guests, yourself and your wallet! She’s also given some awesome wine recommendations to get you started.

The time leading up to your wedding should be an enjoyable period full of celebrations and pure excitement. There will be some big decisions, sure, but some things just aren’t worth stressing over… like choosing which wines to serve on the big day. I get it though, it can be a tough decision… Chard or Pinot Grigio? Merlot or Cabernet? How many bottles and should the wine be paired with the food? So much to think about!
The number one thing to remember is that planning your wedding should be enjoyable, so choosing the wine should be (and actually can be) fun! Here are a few tips to get you started…
1. Go for at least one white & one red
Go for one white wine and one red wine at the very least (in addition to the Champagne, of course, which I already helped you choose last month!). Some popular wines, like the super oaky, buttery Chardonnays and intensely fruity Merlots, might not actually be the best match for the wedding fare. Instead, think about looking for lighter, more crisp whites that won’t overpower the hors d’oeuvres, like a Sauvignon Blanc for example. For reds, Pinot Noir is a food-friendly option that will be a safe bet whether your guests are eating chicken, steak, or mushroom ravioli.
2. Think about what you like and consider the alternatives
What if you prefer oaky, buttery Chardonnay? Well, it’s your wedding and you should do what you want and drink what you like! However, since many people either love it or hate it, you might consider a Viognier instead. It’ll have a similar richness to Chardonnay, but the oak nuances will be less dominating. Or try an unoaked or ‘naked’ Chardonnay, which is made using stainless steel or neutral oak barrels

3. Personalize it
I always appreciate weddings that have personal touches/details that complement the couple, so don’t feel limited to the song list or the food. You can select a wine that has a story or a special meaning behind it – ie, the wine served on your first date, the wine you enjoyed when he proposed, or a wine from your favorite winery. Unless, of course, it was a $200 bottle… then you might want to rethink that approach!
4. How much to buy and how much to spend?
You can usually plan on one drink per guest per hour, but when in doubt, it’s best to have too much wine on hand than too little. No one wants to stop and make a booze run midway through the evening, and you certainly don’t want to have to worry about things like that on your big day. Also, consider your guests’ tastes. Are they the types that like to guzzle down the wine without a thought (go for less expensive wines then) or the types that want to sip and savor their wines while mingling (maybe consider more special bottles)? Even if your guests are mostly red drinkers, at big gatherings like a wedding, people tend to reach for white wines over red. For one, many weddings are held in the summer months when it’s warm outside and a cold drink sounds better. And second, no one wants to be that person that spills red wine down the bride’s dress. Yeah, not so good.
5.  Make it a fun event
Overall, it’s important to remember to have fun when choosing your wedding wine. You could even buy a few bottles that you’re interested in, invite a few friends over for a tasting, then let them help you pick out the winners if you just can’t decide. Just consider it another pre-wedding celebration.
Here are a few good options to check out, based on my recommendations above:

Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc ($14) – it’s got lots of tropical fruit and citrus with a lively acidity. A great Sauvignon Blanc year in and year out.
2012 Bonterra Viognier ($13) – this wine is floral with nice apricot and peach flavors, and a somewhat spicy finish. Refreshing enough for summer, but a good option any time of year.
2011 Mark West Pinot Noir ($10) – big on juicy red fruit like cherries and raspberries, with a slightly smokey, spicy finish. It’s easy on the budget and easy to drink.
2012 Meiomi Pinot Noir ($20) – a little bit earthy, a little bit fruity, and a little bit spicy, this is a crowd pleasing Pinot, I can promise you that.

Things remembered coupon code: How To Choose Wine For Your Wedding Advice

Anthony Walkenhorst of Kim Crawford Wedding Wine Tips

With all you have to plan for your wedding, from the flowers to the dress to the guest list, choosing a wine that pairs well with your menu (and will keep guests happy!) shouldn't be a daunting task. That's why we spoke with Kim Crawford winemaker Anthony Walkenhorst on the best ways to choose wines for your wedding, not just for your menu but for convenience sake!
A bit of bubbly
Weddings are a celebratory occasion so you want to serve a wine that's special. For an extraordinary and less expected option, surprise guests with a sparkling wine from New Zealand! Kim Crawford's 2009 Fizz Methode Traditionnelle, for example, is a festive and elegant wine with bright lemon, grapefruit, and white peach aromas and a classic champagne-style brioche complexity. It's crisp and minerally on the palate, making it a perfect pairing for a variety of hors d'oeuvres, and is sure to delight even your most discerning guests.
Consider the season
Guests appreciate when you offer a red and white option, and Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir are popular choices. When placing your order, it's also key to consider the season of your event. For example, if you're hosting a fall, winter or early spring wedding, people tend to drink more red wine compared to a summer or outdoor occasion where people gravitate toward a crisp white to cool them down. So stock up accordingly!
Choose a wine with a screw cap
With large events like a wedding, quick drink service is key to guest happiness. To alleviate the stress of the bartending staff chose a wine with a screw cap over a cork to maximize efficiency and cut down on the inevitable bar line.

Chill your wines appropriately
The proper serving temperature can transform a wine from OK to extraordinary. Keep wines away from sunlight and heat exposure to ensure quality by storing them in a wine fridge or temperature controlled area (like a cellar). But here's a trick — if you are in a hurry and need to chill a white wine quickly, fill an ice bucket with equal parts ice, water and a dash of salt and in under 30 minutes you'll have a perfectly chilled bottle ready to enjoy!
Too much is just enough
It's always better to have wine left over than risk running out mid dance party. If you figure three glasses per person for a dinner, you should be in good shape and will likely have some leftover wine. And you can always find a use for the leftovers — as gifts to special guests as they depart, wines for your honeymoon, or to stock your first bar together!

Things remembered coupon code: 10 Tips for Finding the Perfect Wedding Ring

1. Do we need to get matching rings? The most common question I get asked is 'Should a couple wear matching rings?' I have seen many answers to this question over the years, but my personal opinion is NO, the rings do not need to match. My feeling is if a couple is comprised of two individuals, it is perfectly okay to maintain that individuality by each getting a ring that suits their personal tastes. Having said that, I offer options that allow couples to choose similar designs that can be customized for each partner's taste: same rings, different looks.

2. Should we get engagement rings or wedding bands or both? I am a strong believer in getting engaged. It always seems to me that in our struggles to achieve marriage equality, same-sex couples skip a very important part of the longtime relationship, the engagement. So: Get Engaged! I am just beginning to see more couples insisting on that nice shiny diamond (or other stone) on their finger for a period of time before the wedding. With so many options as to how to make a wedding set out of an engagement ring and wedding band, everyone is sure to find one that works on his or her finger. I suggest looking into non-conventional ideas for the rings. An engagement ring DOES NOT need to be the old fashioned traditional ring with a single stone standing tall in a high setting. There are ways to make a set of rings that are classy, elegant and timeless.

 3. What hand do we wear our rings on? This is a tricky one. Some claim the hand you choose depends on if you are straight or gay. Others suggest it is your religious background that dictates which hand to wear your rings. Usually, I find that a straight couples wears their rings on the left hand whereas a gay couple will wear them on the right. I also know of many women who wear their engagement ring on left hand, and once the wedding band is added at the wedding, they switch the engagement ring to the right hand and wear the rings individually. I think it is a personal decision. My preference is right hand for both an engagement ring and/or the wedding band.

4. Do the rings have to be Gold? Silver? Platinum?Obviously there is no right or wrong metal when choosing a wedding ring. Though I notice the metal of choice by most is gold, with platinum making up about 20% of selections. Silver is an affordable substitute, but not as durable in keeping its shine and luster over time, so may need to be thought out. I always remind people that if these are rings that they plan on wearing every day for the rest of their lives together, they need to consider something durable and long lasting, though care and long-term treatment of any metal would help the longevity of any ring.

5. Who proposes to whom?Ah. An interesting question. The answers are plentiful here, simply because the dynamics of each relationship is different. I find there are couples who choose to have the discussion on whether or not they would like to get engaged and then married, in which case the proposal is less of an issue than the purchasing of the rings. However, when one partner decides on taking that step of commitment and would like to surprise their significant other with a proposal of matrimony, there is never a right or wrong answer as to who decides to go first and propose. Unlike straight couples where the norm is to have the guy woo the girl and ask for her hand, in same-sex couples I feel both are in a position to do the proposing.

6. Should we shop together or surprise each other? I do find many couples shop together for their rings, meaning they discuss ahead of time their plans, make decisions together and get their rings at the same time in full sight of each other's choices. However, every now and then I get the romantic who walks in -- be it male or female -- who wants to get that special someone an engagement ring and 'pop the question.' Those stories always tug at my heartstrings, and I find that with the acceptance of engagements among same-sex couples, these are becoming more frequent. The interesting thing is what happens next. When one partner proposes to the other, is a reciprocal exchange required? Again I have to say each couple is different, but the norm is usually that the partner who was proposed to first will then want to go out and get his/her now fianc'e a ring as well.

7. How long before a wedding (or proposal) should we be shopping for rings? It usually takes me, as a jeweler, anywhere from two to three weeks to make a ring from start to finish. I normally sell designs that already exist and just need to be created to the specifications (finger size, gold color, etc.) of the customer. However, when custom-designing a bespoke ring, sometimes that may add a week or two. Other stores may offer anywhere from one week to six weeks waiting time, so take into account enough lead time if you have a special date in mind.

8. What if I do not know his (or her) finger size? Though ring sizes can be modified after the fact, I always suggest getting a more accurate measurement before ordering your rings. If you are shopping together, naturally walking into a jewelry store and asking to get your fingers measured is always a good idea. Another suggestion is long before you even think of getting rings to have both your fingers measured and writing it down somewhere, for that 'someday' when one of you may need it. And of course, the ultimate 'I want to surprise him or her' what do I do now' scenario comes to mind. In those cases, borrowing a ring the partner will not miss for a day or two and have it sized at a local jeweler would be sufficient to get the finger size. If that doesn't work, perhaps getting the aid of a friend or family member to ask or have the partner get sized while shopping may produce the needed information. Finally, not as accurate, but better than nothing, there is a great ring sizing chart here that may help. For a ringsizer, click here.

9. Does it have to be rings? Though traditionally we have all grown up seeing rings as symbolic of a couple's love and commitment towards one another, over the years I've seen couples that have chosen to get bracelets or pendants instead. In my opinion, rings symbolize our bond much stronger than a linked chain around the neck or wrist, but either will do keeping in mind it's really the symbolism that matters.

10. What should be the budget? Naturally budget is a personal decision based on many variables, but I always suggest a couple first consider the amount they feel is within their means. Next, go look at rings without purchasing. Online surfing is a good way to get ideas at price ranges. I find many people are surprised at what their budget actually allows them to purchase. After gathering some data, revisit your budget. Consider either maintaining the budget you started with, or adjusting the budget according to what is out there. You'll be able to find a ring within any budget, it may simply take some time and require some compromising on quality or size, but every budget has a ring out there. Most importantly, once you decide on a budget, it is very, very easy to be tempted to raise it. Try to avoid the temptations! Keep in mind a typical same-sex couple interested in both engagement rings and wedding bands are talking about potentially purchasing 4 rings over the course of the engagement. These rings can easily fit any budget, as long as you don't get tempted to overstep your perimeters. My final words of advice: Make the experience a fun one! Enjoy the browsing, shopping, and surfing, whether you do it together or individually. So'Get Engaged! Get Married!

How to Choose the Best Wedding Band for Your Engagement Ring

We all spend a lot of time focusing on engagement rings, from trends to carat size to which designers make the best ones, but truth be told, you'll probably spend more time wearing your wedding band post-nuptials. The band is usually the ring that makes the cut when you're engaging in an activity that doesn't require a lot of bling (i.e. spin class). In addition, with the slew of different types of engagement rings available for the choosing, how does one go about choosing a band to pair with it? It's easy to assume that a simple round band will do the trick, but that's not always the best option, depending on your engagement ring's shape. To set the record straight, we consulted one of our favorite jewelry designers, Anna Sheffield. (We could stare at her breathtakingly unique designs all day.) As expected, she knows (and designs) the exact bands to best complement any engagement ring. Keep scrolling to hear her expert advice and to shop rings from her vast collection, as well as additional options based on her recommendations!

Sheffield says, "The problem solitaires often present when looking for a band is that the cross-section is a round or other shape on a slender band. That 'snake that ate an orange' shape means you need a notched band in order for it to sit flush. What I have tried to do is make these feel like beautifully designed rings on their own, so without the solitaire, it's still a lovely piece of jewelry." She continues, "We have a curve band in the collection that's the most versatile for stacking. It's a really elegant shape, not obviously notched, and they come in plain as well as diamond-dusted and even ones made with precious gems. Also, they stack with each other, so you can make a really magnificent set of the curves or layer them with other smaller nesting bands."
"Emerald cuts can be peculiar, since they're sometimes quite elongated, asmarquise often are as well," Sheffield says. She often recommends one of thecurved rings from her collection, but says that "a notched band with a rectangular shape is nice." We'd have to agree.

Perhaps the easiest type of ring to pair with a band, Sheffield says of three-stone rings, "The great thing about your standard three stones, when they're round, is you can wear them with a flat band. In that case, I would recommend playing with metal and diamond color to make a beautiful and maybe even unexpected pairing. For example, when a client loves black diamonds but doesn't want them in an engagement ring, she could select a band with black diamonds. I am personally a fan of mixing metals, so it's also a great opportunity to layer a yellow or rose gold piece with your platinum, or vice versa!"
